THE STORY SO FAR

On 12th July 2011, Chris and Colin Weir won a life-changing £161m on the EuroMillions lottery. The couple, from Largs in Scotland, are the largest winners in the draw’s history.

THE STORY SO FAR

Since then, Chris and Colin have supported numerous good causes, charities and individuals, both locally and nationally. Amongst them are:

  • The Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddlesteamer which is berthed in the Clyde;
  • Gregor Ramsay, the young Scottish racing driving sensation;
  • Largs Thistle Community Football Club, funding new pitches at the club’s ground;
  • The Beacon Arts Centre, a state-of-the-art theatre complex in Greenock. The Weirs provided funds to fit out the kitchen and café/bar areas in which employment opportunities are being provided to some of the most vulnerable in the community;
  • Lee Craigmile, an Ayrshire artist who, with support from the Weirs, is now studying at the renowned Florence Academy of Art;
  • National Sports Training Centre, to support the creation of a multi-use indoor 3G sports hall;
  • Stephen Hilton, the only Scot in the UK Braille Chess team, who now has training software to prepare for competition and funds to enter competitions;
  • and Hayley House, a residential home which received funds to carry out major renovations.

At the time of their win, Chris and Colin pledged to start their own Trust in order to go on sharing their good fortune. The Weir Charitable Trust (WCT) was launched on Monday, 4th February 2013 with an initial donation of £5m.

WCT supports individuals, groups and charities, the length and breadth of Scotland, who are struggling to get funds from the more traditional or mainstream sources.

Speaking at the time of the first anniversary of their win, Chris and Colin said:

“The biggest change in our life is that we can now support causes close to our hearts in a more meaningful way. It is a privilege to be in a position to see a situation where help is needed and be able to do something about it.”

That wish to make a real difference in Scotland is what gave life to the Weir Charitable Trust and it will be at the heart of everything the Trust will do in the years ahead.
